Trends in US Online Higher Education: What the Latest CHLOE* Survey is Telling Us

May 2, 2:30 PM EDT

Now in its ninth year, CHLOE is an annual survey of online leaders (Chief Online Learning Officers) at colleges and universities in the United States. CHLOE complements online student enrollment data (the US is perhaps the largest online higher education market in the world) with intelligence on institutional strategy, staffing, faculty development, quality assurance, and technology investment, among other issues.

This presentation will offer highlights from recent CHLOE findings, including:

  • Online and hybrid enrollment is growing, while enrollment in face-to-face programs is on the decline.
  • Institutions are quickly aligning their strategic priorities to meet online/hybrid student demand.
  • Most institutions conduct quality assurance for their online programs, yet less than 15% communicate this to students, potentially missing valuable opportunities.

* CHLOE is a joint initiative of Quality Matters (the leading online learning quality assurance organization worldwide) and Eduventures (a pioneering higher education market research company with deep experience with online higher education - part of Encoura). In 2023, CHLOE added EDUCAUSE - the flagship nonprofit higher education technology association - as a partner.
