Observation: eBay, serving as a bridge between sellers and buyers, harnesses the power of two decades' worth of consumer insights.

The data architecture requirements for sellers and buyers are distinct, necessitating bespoke data models. For Buyers, it is personalised and relevant shopping experiences, allowing intuitive browsing through adaptable taxonomies. For sellers, the goal is to accelerate the listing process, providing insights on shipping and pricing, all without having to think about finding the correct categories for their items.

As we continue to enhance the taxonomy, eBay's Product Knowledge team is embarking on an ambitious project to develop a product ontology, utilizing artificial intelligence to meet the varied data needs of users.

What to expect from the presentation:

  • Why eBay is passionate about AI.
  • What Taxonomy ‘means’ at eBay.
  • How time can be saved in redesigning taxonomy: The importance of easily accessible engineering knowledge.
  • How to hit the sweet spot: For example, hierarchy versus relationships defining a Product Type Ontology for Automotive Parts & Accessories
