Irene started her professional teaching career in 1996 as a junior part-time lecturer at the University of the Free State (South Africa) and gradually transitioned into a senior lecturer position at the University of South Africa. During this journey she did a ‘tango’ and alternated her work as manager and lecturer in the corporate environment with lecturing at university level, teaching undergraduate, post-basic and Master-degree students and supervise PhD-students. Four years ago, she moved into her current role as an Education Consultant (Academic Developer) where she is now responsible for the professional development of the lecturers in the four Schools in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Here her focus is on supporting and guiding lecturers in their innovative teaching and assessment practices, ensuring didactically-sound and constructively aligned practices.
