The new General Catalogue of Vatican Museums: delivering extensive public interoperability

February 10, 11.55 AM
  •  Is this what was needed in the pandemic?
  •  Have we got it right?

Giovanni Benigni is currently leading the Vatican Museums' Digital Transformation project. It involves merging all the Vatican's databases into a single, interoperable, IIIF compliant collection management system.

Ultimately it will, in combination with the major Historical Image Collections digitalization project, create DAMS for all the digital assets plus an associated long-term preservation system.

The goal: the creation of a unique access point for objects and related information (media, restoration, analysis, historical information, etc.), and a new, richer discovery website for online collections.

In this session, Giovanni will discuss:

  • The genesis of the Vatican Museums’ new CMS and web catalogue.
  • Whether the web presence and interoperability envisaged are appropriate objectives or a missed opportunity – for curators and visitors.

Live sessions, engaging polls and questions boxes, chats with attendees, and virtual contests for swag...I don't know how a virtual conference could be more awesome! I look forward to this conference every year and the team at HS never disappoints!
