Past, Present, and Future: Strategies for Audiovisual Preservation at the Smithsonian

February 8, 3:45 PM EST

In the past decade, the Smithsonian Institution has made significant progress in developing a holistic preservation plan for the increased preservation of and access to audio, video, and film collections.

Spearheaded by the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives (SLA), the Audiovisual Media Preservation Initiative (AVMPI) seeks to broaden the understanding of the Smithsonian’s audiovisual collections, to provide support for the preservation and digital transfer of analog assets, and to better understand and celebrate this vast body of content with a diverse global audience.

In this session, Alison Reppert Gerber, SLA’s Head of Preservation Programs, will discuss the major strategies employed in planning and executing a pan-Institutional program at the world’s largest museum and research complex, including strategic planning, workflow development, and long-term goals.

What others say

HS DAM events provide me with a welcome opportunity to learn from colleagues, make new connections, and reflect on what I can do to improve my institution's DAM environment.

HS DAM events provided a very affordable (free) and easy way to learn more about DAMs and connect with peers in the field.

This event was informative and engaging. It covered technical aspects of DAM in an accessible manner. The Q&A sections were well moderated, and I am very pleased I made time for attending.
