How the iPad /Tablet has Changed our DAM Consumption Just a few short (months) ago, the ‘tablet’ would have been thought of as something mainly from the office supply store. Perhaps a few of the digital elite would have harkened to the idea as we now think of it – but only a few. Now seeming almost ubiquitous, the iPad/tablet has placed essential and explosive demands on the ‘digital’ supply store. In this session, the panelists will describe innovative workflows, where the tablet has ‘gone to work’ - reducing expenses, increasing efficiencies, and consuming digital assets in multiple formats. You’ll hear the behind the scenes about how they do this, what’s been working and lessons learned along the way. Panellists:: |

Ongoing Developments in Taxonomy, Metadata and Search
Organizations are continuing to evolve in their approaches to leveraging metadata. Much of this is in the integration of traditional digital asset management systems with content tools, transaction systems and the larger eco system of business intelligence and enterprise applications. Metadata becomes not only the identifiers required to organize and retrieve rich media assets but also the glue that ties together multiple processes and systems.
Case Study: You Want What? One Digital Studio’s Path to Searchability. So you just got a shiny new DAM system? Perfect! Now what? Before you can even think about the challenge of user adoption, you first have the challenge of enriching your files with metadata. Department budgets and staffing don't always allow you to staff-up to support your new system, so it’s necessary to develop a tactical rollout. This session provides a practical path to searchability andgives a candid behind-the-scenes look at one digital studio’s success (and some failures) with incorporating metadata into their production files. Key Takeaways: A candid look at how the Marketing Store studio:
Defined their pre-DAM best practices and then build a metadata strategy around them. Case Study: How Effective Metadata and Taxonomy Development Preserved Digital Asset Value at a large biotech company. Has it ever taken you days to find an image, the associated licensing and the records of the previous usage? That was the case for one of the largest biotech companies in the world. This presentation will show how a paper license tracking system evolved into a Digital Rights Management system through the creation of effective metadata and taxonomy. The results: A carefully planned database structure with controlled keywords enabling anyone to find assets in seconds instead of days – preserving digital asset value. The case study presents the road taken to develop a successful metadata and taxonomy system and navigates through the following questions: Where to begin? Who should you involve? What are the best practices?

“Archiving” is More than Back-Up: Preserving while Managing your Digital Assets Organizations expend resources to create and manage digital assets, but often do not include preservation actions as part of the workflow. If a digital asset is identified as having future monetization potential, documents an organization’s history, or should be retained for compliance requirements, it must be preserved. Digital asset preservation is a heavily managed process, and requires actions throughout an asset’s lifecycle. In fact, the first preservation action occurs before the asset is created. Digital asset management systems and workflows should incorporate digital preservation to improve efficiency and ensure that an organization’s assets will be available for future use. This presentation will provide platform-agnostic recommendations on how preservation activities can be integrated into a DAM implementation and workflow and the speaker will describe managed preservation actions and their associated metadata. Linda Tadic, Executive Director, Audiovisual Archive Network After Linda’s presentation, Jane Glicksman, Digital Archivist, Margaret Herrick Library, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Ian Chesnut, a business analyst and DAM integrator, will demonstrate how the Academy plans to leverage native DAM tools to approach digital preservation. Meeting the Developing Needs of DAM Users - Predicting the Future, Always Difficult but Always Fun For many years, Henry Stewart has sponsored a lively session called “the vendor shootout”. This year, we inaugurate a NEW approach - turning to the executives who lead the companies that provide the digital asset management software and services you use and will be using. Taken together, the executives on this panel touch directly very many millions of assets currently under management. We’ve asked them to tell us what the future holds- as they see it - where is practice going? What organizational changes in their clients are they seeing and anticipating? What partnerships are important to them? What kinds of acquisitions and mergers await us? Is DAM becoming a “launch platform” for diverse workflows, or part of the ERP stack - or both? Join us - and bring your questions - as we look beyond the horizon for DAM.

DAM Case Studies Case Study: “Hey, Can I Use This?” — Simplifying Rights Management for Creative Agencies Effective DAM systems empower users by offering self-service entry to creative content. Much of this content is rights-restricted and since art directors and marketing managers are not usually moonlighting as legal professionals, it can be challenging to communicate rights clearly and concisely to both minimize legal risk and streamline use. In this presentation, Tracy Guza, currently a Media Manager at Corbis and formerly a Producer and Visual Resource Manager at notable agencies including DDB, McCann and Creature, reveals strategies for coping with the complexities of rights issues for creative assets as well as clever ways to incorporate existing DAM functionality to hit users over the head with rights information. Ultimately, if a user cannot determine whether an asset is in the clear from a rights management perspective, time is wasted decreasing DAM value to the organization. As a result, the asset becomes virtually useless. Tracy Guza, Media Manager, Corbis Case Study: 31 flavors of DAM within the Publicis Groupe: A series of case studies highlighting some of the Groupe's most unique implementations As the in house solutions provider for media management within the Publicis Groupe, Market Forward has spent the past 10 years working with and developing around DAM. In those 10 years, MF has built over 36 custom implementations/databases - all stemming from the same instance of our DAM. Each responds to the unique needs of the Groupe, the Groupe Agencies and their clients in its own way. From traditional brand management to global adaptation management to agency creative review to asset promotion outside the DAM to invoice routing/approvals, this presentation will highlight some of the most unexpected, sometimes surprising, ways the Groupe drives value from their DAM
Tim Newby, COO, Market Forward, a Publicis Groupe Company Case Study: Crowd Sourcing, predictive algorithms, pattern recognition and a game-changing approach for a new model of metadata development How Magnum Photos uses advanced automated metadata tools for a global project in unlocking the value in one of the world’s most treasured photo archives.

Rights Management: Challenges and Solutions As content distribution continues to fragment audiences and provides an ever changing set of new opportunities, companies are moving to take a structured and integrated approach to rights management. It’s no longer sufficient to treat content rights as the legal department’s exclusive purview or to confine rights information to a spreadsheet or desktop database. Rights information management is a sophisticated enterprise-wide capability and must be done right. It’s a way to build new revenue opportunities through content provision while minimizing legal risk and administrative costs. In this panel, leading experts will share case studies, experiences and successes of integrating rights management into their content management and distribution systems. They will explore changes in the digital media supply chain and expose issues around systematic rights information management. The panel members will offer advice on which approaches worked well for capturing and exploiting structured rights information and show how such rights can add increased value within a fragmented distribution environment. They will also review key industry initiatives that illustrate the ways that leading companies are approaching the highlighted issues.
